Plant Sciences Lecturer Amanda Spangler and UT Digital Learning Won Three Telly Awards for Online Horticulture Courses

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Amanda Spangler, lecturer in the University of Tennessee Department of Plant Sciences, recently won three Telly Awards in the category of Online-General-Education and Training for her online horticulture courses created in collaboration with UT Digital Learning.

The Telly Awards honor excellence in video and television across all screens and are judged by leaders from video platforms, television networks, streaming networks and production companies. The Telly Awards receive over 13,000 entries globally, demonstrating the enormity of Spangler’s achievements.

Spangler worked on and submitted the videos with the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Digital Learning team. “My good friends in UT Digital Learning deserve the lion’s share of any recognition for our work.” She continues, “We are so lucky to have such a dynamic program here at the University of Tennessee, and I’m honored to collaborate with Digital Learning in all of my online courses.”

Spangler also credits James Newburn, managing director of the UT Gardens, for assisting with the winning videos. “James came out to the studio to teach me and my students the art of flower arranging,” says Spangler. “I’m truly a novice at floral arrangement, and we were all delighted to learn from James. He’s really talented!”

Lori Osburn, the UT Institute of Agriculture greenhouse manager, further enhanced the videos by co-creating the virtual tour of the greenhouses on the UTIA campus and by sharing her experience as a greenhouse manager with the class.

Spangler, with the help of Digital Learning and others mentioned, earned bronze awards for the following videos:
