Prestigious Forestry Award Granted to Don Hodges

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Don Hodges, professor and head of the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee, has been named a 2021 Fellow by the Society of American Foresters (SAF). SAF works to advance sustainable management of forest resources through science, education and technology. The society promotes professional excellence while ensuring the continued health, integrity and use of forests to benefit society in perpetuity.

The Fellow title recognizes SAF members with long-standing service to the profession of forestry at local, state, and national levels and is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon members. The award is available only to members who are in good standing with the organization and who actively pursue the advancement of forestry. Like all SAF Fellows, Hodges was nominated by a group of his peers on account of his outstanding contributions.

Of the award, Hodges notes, “It’s truly an honor to be named an SAF Fellow, and I’m very grateful to my colleagues who thought to nominate me for this award. SAF provides an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow professionals on forest research, education and practice and to advance the study of forestry for our students. Forestry is such a critical industry in Tennessee and throughout the world, and I’m thankful to be a part of the effort.”

Hodges, a certified forester, has been a member of the Society of American Foresters for 40 years. He joined the faculty of the Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries in 1999 and has served as department head since 2019.
