Explore more than 40 row crop weed trials
JACKSON, Tenn. – With herbicide-resistant weeds continuing to challenge crop production, access to research-based management information is more important than ever. To help producers make informed decisions this growing season, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture will host its annual Weed Tour Field Day on Wednesday, June 17, at 8:30 a.m. at the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center.
The event will feature more than 40 research trials in cotton, corn and soybeans, showcasing herbicide performance under real-world field conditions. In addition to gaining cost-effective control solutions, attendees will receive updates on pesticide application guidelines and potential changes in product availability.
“It was just a few months ago that an over-the-top label for dicamba was approved, and now, other herbicides are being evaluated,” says Larry Steckel, row crop weed Extension specialist. “We must select the right products and steward them correctly to provide effective control while preventing off-target application.”
The tour will also highlight research involving the new herbicide-resistant trait crops Axant cotton and Vyconic soybeans, including how HPPD-inhibiting herbicides may fit into future weed management programs. Additional trials will focus on strategies for controlling herbicide-resistant ryegrass, goosegrass and Palmer amaranth.
Steckel is hosting the event along with his graduate students Hayden Love, Sally Reed and Gavin Sparks from the UT Herbert College of Agriculture. They, along with other weed specialists, will be onsite throughout the day to answer questions and offer individualized recommendations. There is no cost to attend, and pesticide recertification points will be available.
