Enjoy educational presentations, demonstrations, tours and more
JACKSON, Tenn. – Fall is an ideal time to plant many varieties of trees, shrubs, perennials and cool-season selections. Gardeners looking to enhance their landscapes can find plants, information and guided tours at the annual Fall in the Gardens plant sale and lecture series at the West Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center. This free event is scheduled for October 1 from 1 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. CDT and October 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT.
The first day of the event will feature educational presentations, guided demonstrations by Madison County Master Gardeners, tours of the gardens and AgResearch Center, local vendors and the beginning of the fall plant sale from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. During the sale, shoppers can browse hundreds of varieties of plants that perform well in Tennessee. The second day of the event will feature the fall plant sale only.
“Fall in the Gardens is one of our biggest events, and it’s such a beautiful time of the year to visit the gardens,” says Camille Newsom, curator of UT Gardens, Jackson. “I hope people will enjoy the free educational activities, guided tours, vendors and, of course, our two talented speakers who will offer timely recommendations on gardening in our region.”
This year’s guest speakers include Natalie Bumgarner, UT Extension residential and consumer horticulture specialist, and Celeste Scott, UT Extension Western Region horticulture specialist. Bumgarner will speak at 6:30 p.m. on “Cool Crops and Hot Results: An Insider’s Peek Into Tennessee Vegetable Gardening and Research Trials,” while Scott will speak at 1 p.m. on “Rooted in Success: The Power of Healthy Soil.”
Tate Welch, horticulture Extension agent with UT-TSU Extension Madison County, says the Madison County Master Gardeners will once again host a complimentary meal for attendees. “Starting at 6 p.m., we invite the community to a potluck dinner you can enjoy during the evening speaker. Plus, we are hosting demonstrations on leaf casting at 4 p.m. and plant printing at 5 p.m., which are activities perfect for all ages.”
